Visio Divina

An Introduction
Visio divina is a useful practice in many ways. It can help us strengthen our ability to listen to our intuition/the Holy Spirit, it can serve as a tool for decision making, and it can also be a way to relax and focus our minds. In all cases, it is a sweet gift to yourself of beauty and time.

The Practice
Click through the images below and select one you are drawn to. Try not to think about it much, just try to listen and respond to yourself.

  1. Once you make your selection spend some time with the image, gazing at it, letting yourself simply notice what you notice.  As you do, breathe in and out, deeply and slowly.  Rest in the quiet, open to the great Presence within you.  Try this for a few breaths.

  2. Now let your eyes focus, stay with the first detail that catches your attention. Try to keep your attention there. If your mind wanders, gently return to that part. Relax into your breath again, breathing in and out, deeply and slowly. Let yourself gaze at that part of the image for a minute or two.

  3. Next, zoom out and let your eyes view the whole image. Take your time and look at every part of the photograph. See it all. Reflect on the image for a minute or two.

  4. Consider the following questions:

    • What emotions does this image evoke in me?

    • What does the image stir up in my body?

    • What thoughts does the image bring forth in me?

    • Does this image lead me into an attitude of prayer? If so, let the prayers take form in you. You may choose to write them out, draw them, color them, move with them, or sit with them.

  5. Now, offer your prayers to God/Benevolent Presence/Love in a final time of silence.
